Belated Reaction to Kickstarter’s Apology

Posted on Jul 3, 2013 in Blog, Feminism, Publishing | 3 comments

When everything went down with the “How to Sexually Assault Women” PUA Kickstarter project, I was incensed.  It was just one more insult added to the barrage of sexist, misogynistic, and hateful rhetoric hurled at women and good men in what appears to be a banner year for this kind of bullshit. And it was one more piece of evidence that the shitty men are winning.  The PUA piece of shit earned $16K for his project, and impressionable and lonely men who backed the project will get...

Goodbye Kickstarter: I Don’t Support Orgs That Support Rapists

As you may have heard today, Kickstarter has decided to honor the funding of a “How to Sexually Assault Women” book, despite the fact that the project is a clear violation of Kickstarter’s own Terms of Service, which prohibits the submission of content that is: “unlawful, threatening, abusive, harassing, defamatory, libelous, deceptive, fraudulent, tortious, obscene, offensive, profane, or invasive of another’s privacy” It’s disappointing for many reasons, not least of which is...

My First Transvaginal Ultrasound

Posted on Mar 4, 2013 in Blog, Feminism, Sexuality | 1 comment

I spent Friday in the emergency room. I had quick-onset, debilitating flank pain. It was scary.  While I thought it could be kidney stones or something I could tough out, there are too many organs in that spot to take it lightly.  So off to the county hospital I went. The hospital I went to is a teaching hospital, so there are a lot of baby doctors running around being all cute and awkward.  My doctor was a young, timid, Muslim man.  I assume he’s a virgin.  He tried to be a pro as he...

This Halloween, Why Not Make an Investment in Lesbian Werewolves?

Posted on Oct 31, 2012 in Blog, Feminism, Literature, Publishing, Writing | 0 comments

Halloween. While your neighborhood is filled with screaming trick-or-treaters and insecure adults in costumes they keep hiking down to cover their asses, you might be wondering “What’s in it for me?” Well. . . have you heard of lesbian werewolves? I know, I know. Lesbians aren’t real, you might think. They’re just some mythical creature conjured up by our ancestors to scare our children into obedience. But what if I told you that once every 18 months, new stories...

Don’t Take Me Seriously

Posted on Aug 15, 2012 in Blog, Feminism, Gender, Publishing, Writing | 0 comments

(Disclaimer: I’m wearing my angry writer pants. I employ many italics. You’ve been warned.) No one can take me seriously.  Or rather, no one will take me seriously. This lovely invective has been slung at me a handful times since Lunatic Fringe debuted last September, and it’s gotten to the point where I need to sling back. No one will take me seriously. . . It is, of course, always attached to a clause. No one will take me seriously if. . . I self-publish. No one will take me seriously...

WisCon 2012 – My Experience

Posted on Jun 2, 2012 in Blog, Feminism, Gender, LGBTQ, Literature, Publishing, Writing | 2 comments

Phew. I’m back! Despite averaging 4 hours/night of sleep and gaining 4 pounds (damn you Wisconsin and your tasty beers and cheese curds!), my experience of WisCon this year was fabulous. Unlike last year, this year I had a real, live book that real, live people have read.  I had my first fan interaction during the Gathering, from a man who just wanted to say he loved my book. I actually squeed (not peed, though I may have wanted to) from excitement.  Here in the Bay Area, if people...
